History
I started freelancing during those times where I was positioned as a Software Quality Assurance Tester in one of Cebu’s esteemed Research and Development company during my On-the-job-training days which lasted for a year and 6 months. I was never satisfied with the amount of acquisition I attained from SQA, and decided to venture freelancing hoping to learn, learn and learn!
Involvement and Visibility
I started making myself visible by joining through a couple of forums, and started with only the HTML-TABLE skills. You can check out rangana on these forums where I used to actively lurk:
Assumption
When I joined the board, my goal was to help fellow members, and learn at the same time. However, it wasn’t so easy. There were members better than me and had been in the field for a couple of years and truly, was far more better. That said, I had to struggle to learn what they knew and study what they’ve crafted, and it works! Helping-learning process is far better than seating at the class for another set of theoretical lessons.
Basic Knowledge
HTML was my forte during that time, and knowing only HTML won’t make you “marketable”. So, at least, I have to deal with CSS and learn Javascript altogether. I had to sleep a maximum of four hours for I had to wake up early and go to school… and it’s tiresome and definitely dull, but it was my passion which fueled up my zeal to continuously improve myself.
Tools and Resources
These tools are what I consider a-must for optimized web development:
- Notepad++ – Use this as your code-editor. Trust me, you’ll learn fast if you’ll get used seeing gibberish codes.
- Filezilla – a lightweight FTP client. Use this if you want to connect to a server via FTP.
- ColorCop – a tool that let’s you pick up the color you want, and provides you with it’s hexadecimal color value.
- Firebug – when you wish to debug your Javascript, firebug will be your best friend!
- IETester – If you wanted to check your site on all versions of IE, this one works perfect.
- Graphic Editor – You can have any graphic editor you desire. You can have Photoshop or GIMP. Opt to the one that you’re comfortable.
- XAMPP – If you want to run PHP and MySql through your system
These resources are on my bookmark list, and they continuously help me improve my sloppy coding skills:
The more you learn, the more you’ll realize there’s much more to learn
